4 habits that speed up period-end closing
Period-end closing is the busiest time for finance teams and SAP support. Across many clients I have seen that shortening the close is rarely about a new tool. It is usually about steady habits.
- Write the close calendar down. Which step, owned by whom, finished on which day? Once the calendar is shared, waiting times become visible.
- Automate the repetitive work. Currency revaluation, accruals and carry-forward postings are the same every month. Doing them by hand costs time and creates errors.
- Clear open items during the month. If goods receipt/invoice receipt (GR/IR) and clearing items pile up for the close, the number of days grows.
- Record the root cause of every delay. Logging "why were we late this month?" the way you would a ticket prevents the same issue next month.
Improving the close is not a project. It is a routine you get slightly better at every month.
